The other day Prashant has posted an article about something called an ego-search. It was something about searching about yourself in Google and getting your name, website in the echelons of the search results. Actually this concept in itself is a huge industry in internet domain. Companies pay huge amount to advertise with search engines and pay even more to make their site listed higher and higher in search engine results.

This is SEO – search engine optimization. This is the concept where a person tweaks the content of his website so that whenever somebody searches for particular keyword, his site jumps as the 1st search engine result. Actually Google, AltaVista, Northern Lights, Lycos or any kind of search engines have some algorithms in place. The crawlers (software search programs) search for the keywords (that the user has entered) in the web pages based on these algorithms. The web pages which provide the matches most suitably are returned in the result.

Now what this SEO services person does is, he manipulates the content of the homepage of your website in such a way that your website always figures in the result set of a search.

This is not magic; it is just that a phrase is spelled in a unique way and repeated a particular number of times on the web page.
