Have you seen my other blog - Burfila - ?

subject of rage

why do biharis get enraged when you call them 'bihari'?

why do keralites get enraged when you call them 'madrasi'?

and most funnily why do this friend of mine gets enraged when i call a female female.

i think you generally don't like a word or thing because you associate it with some dirt.

she even goes on to the length of calling it derogatory. i mean i use it like any word. i just substitute it the word girl with female, for example, sexy female, hot female, lovely female :D. it is absolutely a harmless substitution. and i don't even doubt my mannerism. maybe she doesn't just likes the sound of it but it sparks this argument in my mind - what about it?

an update, today there is this email doing rounds in our company which has a pic of benazir bhutto sitting on a couch in a absolutely small skirt. outright sultry legs, i must say. i am still trying to pick up my jaw :D

  • Burfy then dont call her 'female'. Some ppl dun like certain terms..just respect that na.

I have a friend who doesnt like being called 'oh u poor thing'..even if that didnt mean anything nasty. So I stopped calling him that. And all's ok now.

besides u said this in ur last post abt some friends who apparently couldnt take criticism:

**some people are just over-sensitive assholes

d u think it's right to use the term 'assholes' towards a friend? I sure hope it's not me u were referring to in that post - but I sense it might even be me cos that post came straight after my comment to u in my blog.

  • how come I haven't seen it yet? and, please wait for my side of the story!

  • See you don't know how a person is associating a certain word in his/her mind! A Bihari probably gets upset if called a Bihari is because he knows other people use it as a bad word! I know most of these chauvinistic North Indian men use 'female' without any respect for a woman that's why I don't like it! Why can't you say 'woman'? It's a very noble word ;)

  • soo - it is not north indian men [and let me tell u - u r being subjective here], it is ur prejudice madam. plus, if u don't have data u can't claim [even then the data can be fudged]. everyone knows how the condition of womenfolk in bengal has been.

and moreover someone else's attitude don't make a word gud or bad for u. u urself feel the word sounds bad which is why it sounds bad to u. tommo it might happen that copule of guys start saying woman in a queer fashion - then would u treat it as a bad word too?

By Blogger burf, at July 27, 2006 1:13 PM

  • you have a point...but it's always to do with general word associations! I don't think the word bitch was a gaali until people started using it as a bad word! Like gay - who would ever know in the 18th century that the word would come 2 mean homosexuals? So when I come across 'gay' in some old classics, it's always funny to see how innocently they used it then!

By Blogger Soosixty, at July 27, 2006 1:17 PM

  • that still sounds better

see, usage of word female is just a fad. no one means offence as such.

  • hmmm...i don't see the harm in giving up a certain word that cld upset sumone u call a fren?...small sacrifice and that can't possibly make u feel like u were compromising on a whole lot...

being sensitive to others feelings is not abt being a wimp or not having ur own opinion...

must every little thing be debated?

how u word a sentence makes all the difference in making and breaking relationships...much like facial expressions...face to face, one cld be silent but say so much wid expressions...words have that effect too...just use them judiciously and carefully...no harm in doing just that much between friends?? right?

By Blogger ishipishi, at July 27, 2006 3:31 PM

  • yes, no harm in giving up, i give up the word, u give up the aversion to the word, that much for a frnd, huh

  • I SOOO agree with every word SOO said :) He/She seems to know what speech etiquette is.

'Female' can be an abusive word...'Woman' or 'Lady' is a better word.

And Burf has even stopped answering me..so who's raged here? lol!

    Keshi.
